This tutorial explains how to turn a layer of text or type into a shape. Converting text to a shape versus flattening the layer will let the text maintain its vector capability. It aslo allows the file to be printed at the best possible quality, even better than if the file contained live text. With thousands of fonts floating around the internet and on computers, this is good design practice, and your printer will love you.
Step 1: Create a new document by pressing Ctrl + n (Command + n on a Mac) or you can choose File/New in the top drop down menu.
Step 2: Create the file at the dimensions needed with a dpi of 300. The file should be to actual size. If your final product needs to be a left chest print at 6 in. by 6 in. then your document needs to be 6 in. by 6 in.
Step 3: Do all your design work. Save a copy of the art for your records. A separate file for yourself is necessary for modify the text latter if needed.
Then find the layer with text on it. Right click the layer and choose Convert to Shape. You have to do this for all the layers that have text.
Step 4: Now its time to save your document. Pressing Ctrl + Shift + s will bring up the save as dialog or you can use the top drop down menu and choose, File/Save As, as seen below.
Step 5: Choose your file format as Photoshop, make sure the Layers button has a check box in it.
Your Done! Now all you have to do is get the file to us. If the file is 20MB or less you can use our File Upload function. If the file is larger than 20MB you will have to bring in the file or mail a CD or Jump drive to us.
